Even when we can agree upon a sex criterion for 'lexicality', how many different meanings are we going to assign to such teen sex work items as give, take, go, come, make and get? What it boils down to is that when we make word counts we are covertly attempting to make 'meaning' counts. The practical value of word counts will be as good as our theories of semantics. 'If the problems in the case of 'words' are so complex, how much more so are those in the case of grammatical categories. Even if we could establish some satisfactory criterion of similarity for sentence, phrase or word structures, we would still be faced, as we have seen in chapter 8, with the problem of multiple meaning. One and the same surface structure may have a number of interpretations, just as quite different surface structures may have similar interpretations. If it appears illogical to treat such items as give and take as belonging in only one category for the purposes of counting, it must surely be equally illogical to count ambiguous structures as belonging to only one category. There is, however, a much more compelling reason for teen sex work disregarding the accounts of the relative frequency of phonemes in a language, and that is that they are abstractions required for linguistic description, not concrete entities. What we learn when we learn pronunciation is not abstractions but how to make the appropriate movements of the vocal organs – if you like, speech sounds – and phonemes are realized in a wide variety of ways, depending upon their phonetic environment. Perhaps, then, what we need is a frequency calculation of busty teens actual phones, as they occur in the speech of native speakers. To suggest such an idea is to reject it out of hand. Even if we could set up any meaningful system of classification of the almost infinite variety of phonetic realizations of phonemes in language use, the variation amongst individual native speakers is far too great, even amongst those who are said to speak 'with the same accent', for us to be able to come to any useful picture of the relative frequency of speech sounds.
